I would like to say thanks to the hard working officers that protect us everyday. We have all heard that our department is under staffed and working harder as they lose more officers to other endeavors. I would like some ideas from folks on how we as a community might help the police department recover from the recruiting shortfall and get the department back up to staff.

:eek:There is something that can be done.We as the citizens of Roswell need to go to the city council and hold their feet to the fire and find out why our officers aren't getting the pay that they deserve. That is the only thing standing in the way of our Officers recruiting and keeping new officers. Before long it's going to be the Roswell Sheriffs Department,We will no longer have a Police Department if something doesn't get done.

Going to the city council will do no good. We have already tried that several times. The council refuses to hear us. But none of the city council seem to worried about a missing $90,000. Or that one of the largest emploiers has illeagle allians working on US Government aircraft, or that the rent is behind, unless it has been paid resently.
But the city does not have enougth money to pay policemen/policewomen. Makes you wonder who is looking out for the intrest of the citizens of Roswell. If you remember it took a court action to get a county commissnor of the commision who lived in Lubbock. Aned she did not have to pay the county back the salary. The only way we can get any changes is with votes.
I have an Idea, Lets start a pitition to add a box on the ballit.
NONE OF THE ABOVE
Take care

It scares me to read about other cities without a police department...we take it for granted that they will be here if needed...but who is going to stay here and risk their lives when the city will spend $300,000 on some statue for the lawn at the museum...only to be underpaid.
I am told that certain funds that come in have to be used for certain things...like statues, and I say that is ridiculous...and it tells me that we ought to be looking for money in other places then that CAN go to police and fire protection.
I have heard of several people on city payroll who have retired and then are hired back as "consultants"...double dipping!
I love the Alien stuff...but our city has no business paying out money for a "party" if we can't afford to protect our citizens and guests with decently paid police and fire personnel.

Well did you know that there is 100,000 a year just sitting there and the city refuses to use for the purpose of keeping Roswell safe. They refuse to give that money to the RPD so the can recruit and keep officers. So I guess Were either need to get something done about this or in 10 or so years we are going to be Sooooo Screwed.

concerned, we missed you.
Without the emotion, if you can, please try to tell us what we, as a group can do to help. We don't know all the issues from either side, so it is difficult to know what would be the best path to take. All we can do right now is voice our opinions. You are involved, so you need to explain what is going on, at least from your prespective.

As I mentioned in another thread/post, we need to focus our property taxes on basic needs, like first responders, before we dump $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ into luxury items like Aqautic Swim Centers.
I am in favor of a new fire station on N Garden and a new Animal Control Shelter, but I have to question the wisdom of our city council to spend our property tax money on projects that will not service and protect all the people of Roswell.
Would everyone be willing to increase the GRT if a percentage of the revenue could be pre-allotated to first responders? What about a property tax increase. Keep in mind that we already have an annual increase (3%) of property tax revenue based on HB366 (explained in another thread/post).

With my knowledge and information, I think that a dedicated tax devoted to 1st Responders is a wonderful idea. Any ideas on which of our City Council would propose and follow through with such a plan?
I also agree that the priorities of the City Council are a bit distorted. With our booming city our infrastructure needs to keep up. In my humble opinion that should be Police/Fire, Public Works, Streets, and Garbage. The artsy fartsy stuff should come a distant second.
I look forward to any ideas or responses.

concerned,
No more BUT Monkeys. We are already making changes at city council. This forum is directly responsible for 2 of 3 new candidates running for city council. All three are pro-first responders. We need to get all three elected into office first and then we can start working of ways to handle issues between the City and the first responders. In 2010, there will probably be 3 more new candidates and a new Mayor. If you have any influence with the first responders, then these 3 candidates will need their votes.
