View Full Version : Hello all
My Wife and I moved here from Las Vegas NV 2 years ago. Love Roswell, and intend to end my days here. But to maintain Roswell as a wonderful place to live I feel I have to get involved, and this is a great place to start.

Welcome...been here 2 years so we are also "new"...this is a great place to start, we wanted to get involved also and thought a small town would be an "easy nut to crack"...WRONG...there is a "good old boys" mentality and we have found that everyone knows everyone...so you have to walk cautiously and do a lot of looking before you do any speaking! In spite of our frustrations, we love it and plan to stay til the end!!!! Welcome!

Welcome to Roswell folks. Say when y'all moved to town, did you get a package and a visit from the "Welcome Wagon?" I retired in Germany in 1986 and moved back to the states in 1990 and when we had the water turned on we got a visit from the "Welcome Wagon." Does the city do that any more?
I think this would be a better city if the TWO Chambers of Commerce could get together and then work together.

There is a lot of bad blood between the 2 Chambers. It would be extremely hard for them to merge. It will never happen and it doesn't need to happen. They serve different interest in town and both are valuable.
BTW: Welcome to Roswell.

Keep the opinions coming....I enjoy reading the ideas and comments you have. Roswell is a great place to live, but it still has room to grow and improve. Nothing will change if we don't group and speak.

No one is asking them to MERGE, just work together. A good example is the old Conaco Station on 5th and Main.

Swadlo,
It is so difficult to work together when there is so much tension between the players. Both Chambers have strong personalities and cultural differences that I have had to work with lately.
You made a reference to one of my early and favorite issues with the City 2 years ago and I haven’t discussed the Conoco Station with the City since the Hispano Chamber was forced out. The building belongs to the city, the same city that is planning to raise the Gross Receipts Tax (just another little stab). I have tons of historical data on both the Conoco Station and the Carnegie Library (own by Paul Taylor, I tried to buy it)). Both buildings need to be saved from neglect as they are experiencing now. Have you seen the Conoco Stattion lately. It’s already an embarrassment and it’s only been since July that the Visitors Center moved out. I think I will create a new thread for Historical Buildings to see what the rest of the members think. My current house is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Conoco and Carnegie are not. The Conoco Station is only on the State Preservation list. I think I will start something on this soon.

There is quite a history in the "Old Conaco Building." The city did not want to let the Hispano Chamber have at first. It seems as though the city won out in he end. I can remember when they were still pumping gas out of the station.
If you really want some insite to the history of Roswell, and Chaves County, If she is still alive (And I pray that she is.) Get in touch with "Ernestine Chesser Williams" Not only is she a fine Lady, she is an outstanding historian on Roswell and Chaves County. She has written books about this part of New Mexico. She was a school teacher, and a City, County and State treasure as far as I am concerned. I used to work for her Husband and Brother at "Williams and Chesser Stock Farm." She is good people.

And if we let it get run down enough it can be classed as a dangerous structure, demolished and replaced by a nice shiny new office building. And if were really lucky the Mayor will let us name it after him.
Sorry, but my cynicism gene is at it's most active on Monday mornings.

Or the city can complete "The Most Expencive Parking Lot" in all of Southeastern New Mexico. If you really want to research the parking lot Check out how much the city paid for the buildings on the west side of the 400 block of North Main. Then check out how much it cost to demolish the buildings and remove the asbestous and then finalizing of the parking lot. If you will notice most of the peopl who park there work for the city (City Hall) and the county ( The Court House). When the design for the Brass Statue was preposed it was to be paied for with donations. It wound up being paid for with TAX DOLLARS.
I am suprised that the Mexician population in Roswell/Chaves County stood for the "Immortalizing of Chisholm. He stole more land from the earily Mexicians than any one else in south Eastern New Mexico.

I am fairly new but think that Conoco building is such a cute building with a history here.
The city is cleverly staying quiet about this building and allowing it to deteriorate so they can justify tearing it down. I suspect it will be a parking lot one of these days. I thought that that area was supposed to be a "park" when they tore down the buildings across from the courthouse and put the statue up. Then I understand that somehow the electricity got messed up which is why we never seen it used for anything except a gathering spot for occassional protestors! About 5 or 6 years ago, I recall some booths were set up on the 4th of July weekend and vendors sold food and trinkets because I was at that spot for the Alien parade. I don't know if I have seen booths there since. I thought it was going to be sort of a little oasis in the city, but it is basically a parking lot with a statue and I fear that lot will be increased once the city knocks that cute little bit of history down, like they have done with many other beautiful buildings.
